SPECIAL INDEPENDENCE DAY UPDATE

Happy 4th if July!

We've hit 1,000 miles!

Special update for the holiday. Ben and I are currently located at the Kennedy Meadows Pack Station & Resort where we are taking a pleasantly unexpected zero day!

This place!

The hospitality!

The festive surprise of taking a day off! A REAL HOLIDAY!

I will be continuing with the blog entries in a few days, but wanted to let you know we are alive and very well! I just had to give a live update because it will be at least 4 days before I continue with my typical, numerical entries. And we are excited to be spending the holiday in such a fantastic place!

Border collies, (and yes, a border collie puppy), real cowboys, a pine wood cabin room with good company, a saloon, horses, meadows, soft serve ice cream on tap, and a porch for people watching.

I can't imagine a more American (in an old fashioned, splendidly rustic way) place to spend the 4th... Although there are a lot of people here (interesting tourists of some sort), it remains simple, cozy, and relaxing.

Aside from the mosquito hell, the last few days have been pure magic (really!) filled with lakes, stream crossings, views, and thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms.

(Of course I'll touch on all this in more depth when I do my daily entries...)

In 3 days time, we'll be swooped up by Ben's mom Lisa (and his brother Nate - can't WAIT to see you two!!!) where we will return to Yosemite to explore, relax and take in copious amounts of food.

This is where I will fully catch up on the blog! Get ready for MANY updates in a row!

This last section has been really physically demanding (sooooo many stream crossings, secret climbs and huge STAIRS), and the mosquitos have driven us MAD, but it was also some of the best hiking we've had. Just. Too. Much. Beauty.

We miss Sour Cream immensely - we split up with him for the first time in almost 700 miles. He is hiking with his family for a few weeks, taking it slow and will catch up later!

We miss our dear friends Chik Chak & Starfox terribly as well. They're taking some time in the Valley and are sure to catch up with us after our mini-vacation. It'll be perfect timing.

It's funny, the Sierras have managed to split people up over the past few weeks, due to so many various resupply options, town stops, side trips, so much to do and see!! I'm guessing that once we leave Central California, things will be pretty "linear" again... In a sense. We miss our people!!!

Alright - updates soon, but until then - I love and miss you all back home... Enjoy the 4th of July! I know we will: We'll be having family style dinner with the pups tonight, then off to the porch!

The Saloon.

Just a note from far off Australia. Thank you for your wonderful blog. I have no concept of the energy required to update your blog at the end of such arduous days. But let me assure you it is well read and appreciated by us and many of our friends.
Can't wait for the next entry.
Regards
Mother of Starfox.

Hey Thyra,

I tried looking at Ben's blog, but it ends on april 30. Can't see anything beyond that.

Love your blog. Great style and wonderful photos. Thanks for sharing. Maybe you'll be doing trail magic next year when I'm on the trail. Hope to see you and Ben.

Bill (no trail name until I get on the trail..)

Bill: Ben is no longer blogging, unfortunately. He hasn't announced this officially, but it is safe to say he will no longer be blogging while out on trail. Glad you are enjoying the blog! Thanks for all of the comments!!
